Avoid delays and problems by making sure your yard is ready

A playset can’t be installed just anywhere. A good site for a swing set must meet several conditions. This article will help you understand what these conditions are, and also how to achieve these conditions (we refer to this as “ground prep”), so that your playset can be installed on the site of your choosing, leaving you and your family a safe and attractive swing set.

There is a preliminary step to ground prep: choose a spot in your yard where the playset will be installed. There are two approaches for deciding on a location. The first approach is to decide which area of your yard needs the least amount of ground prep, then place the swing set in that area. This can result in less time and expense for ground prep. The second approach is to pick an ideal location for your swing set, then do whatever ground prep is necessary for that location. This will result in your playset being exactly where and how you want it.

Below are some common problems that require some aspect of ground prep. We have also included instructions for eliminating such problems and helping you ensure your yard is ready for the installation of your swing set. Please note that, depending on your exact playset model, the manufacturer may have other ground prep specifications.

1. Unlevel Ground

The ground the playset will be built upon must be level! This means no significant slopes or major contours in the ground. We understand that very few yards are completely flat, but your yard must have a level place for your particular unit in order to ensure a safe and successful assembly. Erecting a playset on unlevel ground is detrimental:

• It is a major safety risk for your children and all who use the unit
• It voids the warranty on the playset in the case of most manufacturers
• It makes the assembly process progressively difficult, causing improper alignment and spacing of parts, and ultimately leading to a less safe and less attractive unit
• It results in a shorter product lifetime

How to Level the Ground: you can hire a landscaper or do it yourself. Doing it yourself may require removing sod from the area (we recommend renting a sod-cutter for areas larger than 36ft2, but for smaller areas, using a spade shovel would work just fine). Once sod is removed and only dirt remains, with a shovel, you can move dirt from higher ground to lower ground (or simply remove dirt from higher ground) until the ground is flat. Tree roots may be an issue! Please note that additional leveling can be done during the installation if needed.

2. Other Hindrances

A. Spaces that aren’t open enough – ensure your yard has open space for your playset plus a safe play buffer zone (recommended 6 ft on all sides by most manufacturers). Any plants, pavers stones, lawn accessories, etc. should be removed.
B. Utility fixtures – ensure that no buried utilities, wires, pipes, etc. will interfere with play or installation. Ensure any septic tanks, gas tanks, etc. pose no risk of installation or play.
C. Sprinklers – ensure that you are not planning to position the swing set over any sprinkler heads or irrigation equipment.
D. Overhead hindrances – ensure no overhead obstacles interfering with the upper parts of the playset (power lines, roofs, trees, etc.).
E. Animal waste – ensure that the play and installation area are cleaned and clear of all animal waste.
F. Playground surfacing materials – if you plan to lay down weed block, please do so prior to installation. However, installation of any surfacing materials (i.e., rubber mulch, wood mulch, sand) should be done after installation.

Depending how you want your set oriented (parallel, perpendicular or cattycorner to home or property lines), some apparent hindrances may not affect play or installation. Once the location and orientation of the playset are decided, it is a good idea to look at the dimensions of the playset and then place markers where the four corners of the playhouse will be, where the end of the swing beam will be, and where any other extensions to the playhouse will end up. The location of the markers should make clear those obstacles and hindrances that require ground prep as well as those that do not.

ALWAYS REMEMBER: ground prep is a service Assemblymen offers in addition to playset assembly and installation! To learn more, click here.

Your backyard play area can look like a picture catalog with some simple steps

Many parents and homeowners want to make their backyard playset look like an official playground, with borders, mulch and all the fixings. You can too! With so many types of playground surfacing products available, we thought this might be a good place for you to start considering options.

Fill for play area

There are generally three traditional fill options for your playground: rubber mulch, wood mulch and sand. Of course, there is choice and variation among each type (for example, you can get traditional wood mulch, wood chips or wood fiber, made from either cedar wood, pine, etc.). This chart outlines the differences between the three major types and should help you decide which type of fill would work best with your playset:

Rubber Mulch Wood Mulch Sand

Cost 2-3 times as expensive as wood mulch Slightly more expensive than sand Relatively inexpensive
Lifespan 8-12 years (usually warrantied) 1-2 years (requires frequent changing) 1-2 years (requires replenishing)
Cushioning Provides the most cushion for falls Provides the least cushion for falls Slightly more cushion than wood mulch
Drainage Allows most drainage Slightly less drainage than rubber mulch Allows least drainage
Insects/Pests Insects generally not attracted or habitate Attracts and retains multiple types May become home for certain insects/pets
Health Concerns Health risks unknown and under review (made mostly from recycled rubber) None directly from wood, though conditions may give rise to concerns None directly from sand, though conditions may give rise to concerns
Portability Children may track some into house Children may track some into house Children will probably track into house often
Color Options Comes in various colors Limited color options No color options

Borders for play area

If you’re going to surround your playset with mulch, sand or any other fill, you’ll need borders or barriers to keep the fill confined to the play area. Borders can be rubber or wooden. The differences between wood and rubber borders is practically the same as the mulch differences in the chart above. You could also get creative – what else could be used as a border for your playground?

Weed block

Laying down weed block is critical! The weed block will ensure that, over time, there won’t be any weeds, grass or vegetation sprouting up through the mulch, making your backyard playground an eyesore. There are many different grades of weed block and different areas are susceptible to different plant species, so be sure to ask your landscaper or your neighbors which kind would work best for you. The weed block should be laid AFTER the ground is prepped (see the second post in this series “Preparing Your Yard for a Playset Installation”) but BEFORE any fill material is added.

ALWAYS REMEMBER: Assemblymen can help you “go all out” with playground surfacing, borders, weed block and more – we provide the products and the labor to make it easier for you! To learn more, click here.

Tips and Considerations on Shopping for a Backyard Playset

Ensure your purchase is perfect for your home and your family

Finding the perfect playset for your backyard is harder than you might think. First, there are so many sets to choose from (there are several “major” manufacturers, and each one offers dozens of different models). Second, there are so many factors to consider while shopping for a suitable playset.

Here are some factors to consider:

• Number, size & age of children. How many children do you have and how old are they? Will their friends use the playhouse? For how many years?
• Desired product life span. Are you looking for a swing set to last one child a few years, or multiple children over the span of many years?
• Desired features. Monkey bars, fireman’s pole, glider swing – what features will give your little ones endless hours of enjoyment?
• Your backyard. Is there enough space within the property line for your playset AND a buffer zone? Is the ground level (or flat)? Are any sprinkler heads, trees, tree roots, bushes, etc. in the way?
• Total Price. Does the price of the unit include delivery? Installation? What if ground prep becomes necessary?
• Warranty. Does the manufacturer stand behind their product? How far into the future is the playset covered?
• Ease of assembly. Can you do it yourself, or can you find professional playset installers to do it for you?
• Home Owner Associations: Does your Association have an approval process or any other regulations on playsets?

Take heart! For the most part, choosing a playset is a matter of personal preference. But after years of installing playsets from all the major manufacturers (including Backyard Discovery; Gorilla Playsets; Cedar Summit; Woodplay, Child Life, Superior & Rainbow, collectively called “Big Beam sets”; and Lifetime), however, the Assemblymen have noticed some key differences between the types.

Here are a few playset comparisons we thought you would like to know:

• Wood quality – the wood quality of the Big Beam sets is superior; Gorilla’s wood is good quality; Backyard Discovery and Cedar Summit wood quality is the least impressive.
• Hardware quality – some Big Beam units come with superior galvanized hardware; Gorilla’s hardware is not galvanized but is good quality; Backyard Discovery and Cedar Summit hardware is of the lease impressive quality.
• Openness of construction – the playhouses for all sets except Backyard Discovery are pretty open, allowing for years of use as children grow into them. Many models from Backyard Discovery have clubhouses that are relatively closed in.
• Features & options – all manufacturers offer a wide range of features and accessories, available interchangeably or just on select units. Gorilla sets, however, tend to have more accessories that are interchangeable among many products.
• Ease of Assembly – Gorilla sets are generally the most straight-forward to assemble. Backyard Discovery sets are typically the most intricate. The other units are of standard difficulty, each with its own set of complications and quirks.
• Each unit has its own projected lifetime, warranties, price and weight and use limitations.
• ALL manufacturers have a duty to make their playsets safe for intended purposes, as outlined in the manuals and specifications for each unit

Keep in mind that getting a backyard swing set is a process. As with all processes, you will find your own unique way of approaching it. Just remember that the shopping phase is the first of several phases to this process. In some ways, the shopping phase may be the most important because everything else depends on the playset you select.

Here are some playset shopping tips we’ve picked up over the years:

1. Involve the children!
2. Embrace both online and in-person shopping. In-store pricing tends to be higher, but a brick-and-mortar store may have a display area where your children can sample the products and give you a better feel for what features work best for them. Try shopping online for sets with features you saw live in the store.
3. Envision your perfect set, identify 3-5 sets that come close to that vision, compare all sets based on factors listed above, then choose a set based on that comparison.
4. Ask the retailer if it performs the shipping/delivery/installation, and if not, ask for information on their service provider(s).
5. Be patient and flexible. Between items being out of stock, delivery delays, HOA approval processes, etc., the process can easily draw out.

For the “average consumer”:

Difficulty of assembly: Difficult
Duration of assembly: Approximately 15 hours
Persons required: 2
Special tools needed: No
Prep required: Yes. In summary, (1) ensure ground is level, preferably the entire area of the playset, but at a minimum the area of the clubhouse and the bench that extends out from the front; (2) ensure maximum, adequate and safe space for assembly and play.

Assemblymen’s Review:

• This playset comes in relatively compact packaging. The pieces in the boxes are not organized or grouped according to any particular scheme, making it advisable to organize all parts and hardware before starting the assembly.
• The wood used for this unit is very light and soft, requiring the installers to use caution throughout the assembly. The wood is also susceptible to warping, which can create challenges when it comes to aligning parts. Pilot drill holes before inserting lag screws to avoid cracking the wood!
• This unit comes with thousands of pieces of wood, hardware and various ad-ons and accessories.
• Overall, the assembly instructions are relatively pretty straight forward and easy to understand. They are long though!
• The exterior of the clubhouse is made with pre-fabricated panels, which eliminates the need to install each exterior board individually.
• Metal brackets are used to attach the pre-fabricated panels that form the corner of the clubhouse. Two differently-sized brackets are used, so be sure to use the correct one(s).
• Be sure to not fully tighten the bolts that attach the pre-fabricated panels to the clubhouse until the instructions indicate when to do so.
• The double roof is nearly impossible to perfectly align and attach.
• The anchors simply hammer into the ground and are relatively easy to install.

Jacksonville is gearing up for One Spark and business expansion throughout Florida is on the rise. That means there’s a lot of office furniture to be purchased and assembled. If you’re a small business or start-up shopping for office furniture, consider these tips from this very helpful blog.

One popular retailer of office furniture is our nearest IKEA store in Orlando. To start you IKEA Business shopping experience, visit this page of the IKEA Orlando website.

Keep two things in mind when purchasing office furniture from IKEA Orlando. First, that IKEA Orlando will assemble your furniture only if you pay to have them deliver your furniture too. Second, that IKEA Orlando only provides its assembly services in select zip codes.

Assemblymen, on the other hand, will come to your home or office free of charge and assemble your furniture no matter how you have it delivered. Our assemblers cover a large service area to accommodate IKEA Orlando’s clientele throughout central and northeast Florida.

For example, our services came in handy for the new offices of the new Mellow Mushroom restaurant location in Jacksonville’s historic Avondale neighborhood. They weren’t eligible for the third-party assembly service contracted out by IKEA Orlando, so they hired the Assemblymen. Another satisfied customer! Check out the pictures.

All “assembly required” or “ready-to-assemble” products — whether IKEA furniture, office furniture, playsets, exercise equipment, toys, or anything else — are designed to be assembled by the average consumer, right?

Well that might be the case technically, yes.

But in actuality, there are many products that are so complex and/or time consuming to assemble; a consumer might make a costly (possibly dangerous) mistake or error while assembling it.

Your Product May Justify Hiring a Professional Assembler

Take an outdoor play set, for example, with its hundreds of wooden pieces and thousands of hardware (screws, bolts, nuts, etc.). Depending on the exact model, it can take two moderately skilled adults anywhere between 6-45 hours to assemble and install. Or, as another example, take an office desk, with functional doors, drawers, compartments and locks that have to be assemble and installed completely error-free in order to work properly. While designed to be assembled by anyone, any consumer who wants a perfect final product should consider hiring a professional to assemble these and many other items.

It’s not only the product, but also the consumer’s schedule and life demands that can justify hiring a professional assembly service too.

Your Schedule May Also Justify Hiring a Professional Assembly Service

Consider the professional who could in fact assemble just about anything. Between work, family and everything else, he or she may have only a few hours of down time each week. Does he or she want to spend their precious down time assembling furniture? Probably not! Also consider the family that has purchased an assembly-required item for a particular, time-sensitive purpose (for example, purchasing a playset for a child’s birthday party one week in advance). In these cases, it’s just best to hire a professional to save you the time and the hassle.

Whatever the case, the Assemblymen are here for you! Request a quote online and automatically save 10%!
